  • Is the CompTIA Security+ certification for beginners?

I’ll give two answers for this one…

    The official answer:

The official answer to this question from CompTIA is that they recommend you have at least 2 years of experience in IT administration with a focus on security, and that you’ve passed the CompTIA Network+.

    The realistic answer:

I’ve met more than one person who’s gone from zero prior IT experience to Security+ certified. The kicker here is that you need to have realistic expectations. It will take you longer to study for the exam than someone who does have experience (think months instead of weeks), and it might be a bit overwhelming. But it absolutely is possible.

At the end of the day, CompTIA does not check that “you have at least 2 years of experience.” So a pass is a pass, regardless of your background or prior experience.

Also, the recommendation to get the Network+ first is completely optional. I don’t have the Network+ and I got my Security+. The reason they say that is because 1) they want to sell more certs, and 2) the Security+ does have quite a bit of networking questions in it which I explain more here.
