  • Autoplay videos playing without audio?

Posted by Christophe on July 6, 2022 at 2:57 am

EDIT: We’ve found a way of enabling unmuted autoplay for videos on Chrome, so this hopefully shouldn’t be an issue anymore! Sometimes Firefox still blocks our fix, but it should work on Chrome. Safari is iffy as well.

We’ve gotten a few questions about this because it’s a little bit of an annoyance, so I wanted to explain what’s going on and why it’s happening.

In short: while we’ve enabled autoplay for video lessons on the site, the videos will play muted so you won’t hear any sound unless you manually click on the volume bars to unmute the video.

The not-so-short: This is a browser feature and not something that we can control. All modern browsers do this, because of those annoying websites that would automatically play videos when you loaded a page (without asking you), and then you were stuck trying to figure out where the sound was coming from in your 50 tabs.

The good news is that the more you watch videos on Cybr and enable the audio, the more the browser will realize you want autoplay with sound on when you’re on cybr.com, and so eventually it will stop muting the videos.

If you’re using Chrome, it’s called the Media Engagement Index (MEI) score, and you can view the score for every website you visit by going here: chrome://media-engagement/

Over time, you should see Cybr’s score increase. Until then, I’m sorry that this is annoying :/

    Happy learning!

Interesting indeed. I thought I was the only one that it was happening to It’s quite interesting to know that someone else is also experiencing the same thing as me. I initially thought that it was only happening to me.😃

None of the videos even play on my computer. They only play on my phone. I’ve tried with several browsers as well. I don’t have any privacy settings blocking videos from playing, so not sure why I’m having this issue.

Hey Brian, that’s definitely super weird. Are you getting an error message? Or what’s being displayed? Let’s chat about this please so I can figure out what’s going on. Please reach out on Discord at https://cybr.com/discord or [email protected]

Hey Christophe, I have had a couple of issues with audio. I think the main problem ppl are having is that the sound icon is muted in the media player as a default. Another thing that happens is that if you are watching a video and it autoplays to the next one, it resets to the default option and mutes the media player again. Also with bluetooth headphones, this can mess with the connectivity. Hope this helps.

What browser are you using? I had pushed out a script that was supposed to fix this problem. Knowing the browser and version will help me troubleshoot
